Copenhagen is a city I remember for its waterfront with pale coloured buildings: yellows, blues and other pastels. Its ship lined main canal of Nyhavn and people chilling out along the waterside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We arrived there from Sweden, coming with Stockholm by train. Copenhagen is on an island and at one point to our surprise on our journey through Denmark, the train was put onto a ferry. This practice ended 2022, with the last train line that did this being replaced by a tunnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had spent around a week in Scandinavia and been spoilt by its northern cities, especially Stockholm. Copenhagen somehow didn’t match up to Stockholm for us at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m sure now if I went to Copenhagen in isolation I would be very happy there and have been keeping an eye out for another way to see it again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city is known to be expensive, but there are cheap flights there from a good number of UK airports which could offset the cost. A cheap flight coupled with a budget hotel could work for a long weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like Amsterdam the city has canals, waterfronts and bicycles – lots of bicycles. It has a very chilled out vibe and if you want to relax, this is a good place to do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has wide pedestrian streets, squares & landmarks, upmarket designer shops and a historic inner city with 17th century medieval streets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are a number of museums to choose from, royal palaces, boat tours or kayaks if you prefer to paddle yourself. The Tivoli Gardens is an amusement park in the heart of the city, good for children and adults with light hearts. There are some interesting neighbourhoods also to explore with different characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cafe culture is strong here and the Danes like to chill over a coffee. In summer the harbour is clean enough to swim in, which you couldn’t say for many harbours in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city is safe and relaxed, nicely designed and easy to find your way around. It has a lot of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Denmark has the traditional Nordic food you expect. Rye bread with pork, beef or herring are common. Also you might find eggs, cheese, shrimp, pickles and pate. Meatballs are a speciality in Denmark as in Sweden. Pastries or berry puddings with cream can finish a meal. Like in Iceland you can find hot dog stands, here selling P\u00f8lser – Danish hotdogs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Denmark is somewhere we passed through far too quickly, and it’s somewhere I need to visit in more detail for sure. One grumpy train guard many years ago shouldn’t be held against it forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
